I. DO. NOT. DO. SUN!

I am sure you have noticed by now my red hair and pale skin. My skin just can not tolerate the sun. I am not exaggerating when I say that I can not be out in the sun more than fifteen minutes without sun screen. If I take the chance I am bright red. Most people who receive sunburns are red for a day and then it turns into a tan. My burns stay bright red and painful for at least three days and then fades to my nice shade of pale white.

I am not saying I never tan. Usually at the end of the summer after wearing SPF 45 for three months straight my skin color will be "tan." My "tan" actually looks like the normal person's midwinter skin color.

I remember one of my red-headed friends complaining about how she didn't think she was pretty because she was pale. I have now learned that being tan is supposedly "glam." It has never once crossed my mind to try and be tan so I look "prettier." I have red-headed friends that do spray-on tans or those self tanners. I think it just looks weird. I mean doesn't red hair and pale skin kind of go hand in hand? I am just sayin.' Ok off my soapbox.

Since I am passionate about saving my skin's youth and avoiding pain and agony I am a SPF wearin', hat rockin', umbrella totin', sunglasses flashin', fully coverin' bathing beauty.

When hubs and I go on our cruises we lay out in the sun and find that spot where we can lay next to each other but where I am in the shade and he is in the sun. I have been teased about wearing a towel on my legs and shoulders when the sun is out and no sunblock is available.

I remember going on a mission trip to Mexico and wearing this huge sombrero to cover my whole body. Yes, the high school students we took down there made fun of me. But then when I took off my hat the Mexican children made fun of me laughing and and calling me "Rojas Pecas" which means Red Freckles. I guess they had never seen a red head before.

So in an effort to not burn I made a hat that covers my whole face and shoulders. Combined with sunblock and sunglasses I stay protected and it looks better than a sombrero I suppose.

It is Amy Butler's Sky Blue Hat Pattern. It is a pricey pattern but I plan to make one each year to match all of my swimsuits so it was worth the $10 I paid for it.

  2. Very cute! I am half Italian/half all things fair, blonde and pastey.

Fortunately, I got the Italian complexion. However, whether I can tan or not, I still worry about wrinkles, sun damage and skin cancer, so I always have sunscreen on my face (at least) and try to wear a hat too.

  5. I'm with you on this one, girlfriend. And you're right: we redheads are supposed to be fair-skinned, aren't we??

One wonderful thing about sun avoidance: less damage. I have a number of friends who have always have "beautiful" tans, but now that we're in our 40's they're starting to look wrinkled and spotty. I mean, I've got plenty of wrinkles and spots, but not as many as I would have if I were a sun worshipper.

So I'll join you in the shade. What a cute hat you've got there--I'd be proud to hobnob with you and preserve our fair skin!

  6. No, tan skin with red hair would look WEIRD.
I think you look beautiful and I love the hat.
Did you kick any of the small children that made fun of you?
I would NEVER do that, just wondering if you might have... ; )

  8. How awesome! Oh I wish that I could sew. I live across the street from the swimming pool so the sun and I share a lot of time together. Let's just say we go through a lot of sunscreen in this house.

  9. So cute! You're better off with the 45. I love being tan so much, but I know I'll look like a slim jim one day.

  10. The sun and I seem to be in a constant battle. I'm blond and freckled and ALLERGIC to sunscreen. So, yes, if you're at the beach and there is some crazy lady wearing a three foot hat, sunglasses, a long sleeve shirt, and pants--it's me, so wave and try not to stare.

I think I'll have to buy that pattern. Like you said, it will definitely get used each year!

    Best,
    Kristen

  12. Preach it girl! I don't do sun either. Almost my entire family is made up a redheads. We're not sun loving. When we get together it's like a group of redheaded vampire, we're all so pale. Mmmmm, vampires...Edward Cullen......wait? what was I saying? Oh, yeah, pale, no sun. Right there with you. On the up side, think how great your skin will look when you're older while all your tanned friends will look all leathery. :)

  13. I had a red headed friend once that said she only got enough sun to "knock the blue off", that's how white she was!! I have a daughter that is a red head and I think she would look un-natural with a tan! I need to learn to sew so that I can make her one of those adorable hats!!

  17. Along with you I'm a very pale gal to. Pale is an ugly descriptive word. Creamy milky more attractive of a word to use in place of pale. ;) Nonetheless, I do force my skin into a bronze sheen with the use of over priced bronzers and tanning beds. If ever you are burnt to a crisp take a lukewarm bath filled with an entire box of baking soda. Sit and soak in that for a good 20 minutes or longer. After you're done slather up with Aloe. My skin had an awful reaction to the hot Maui sun this past winter. It had was burnt and had an unsightly itchy rash across my shoulders due to the medication I was taking. My in laws parents, both doctors vacationing, took one look at it and sent me straight to the tub. I've since looked up baking soda uses. Wonderful stuff I tell ya!! But in the case of sunburn, baking soda balances the PH levels of your skin. It's amazing stuff and it's a staple in our home now. Hope this helps you if ever you become crispy. :)
