Roadkill Rescue: Bench to Bookshelf

Thank you to everyone who linked up for my second Roadkill Rescue party.  I went to each and every link and googled over all of your creations!  You guys certainly have a vision.

The winner of the uber cool prize pack is: Heidi at the Crafty Monkey

Thank you for participating, you have 24 hours to claim your prize by emailing me at tnbfarrant@yahoo.com.

As promised, here is how I transformed a “destined-for-the-landfill” bench into a useful bookshelf for my kiddos books.IMG_0744

1.  First I deconstructed the bench by taking the decorative panel off the front using a hammer and screwdriver to pry it off.IMG_0746
2.  Then I took the back piece off in the same way and it looked like this.

3.  Using a circular saw and safety goggles I cut off the legs of the bench.IMG_0748 4.  Then I reattached the back piece lowering it a little bit and nailed it back in place.IMG_07495.  I traced out a pattern on the wood and then used a jigsaw to cut off some of the sides of the shelf to give it more curve.  I then, reattached the front panel.IMG_0751 IMG_0750 6.  Next I sanded the whole thing down really well with 120 grit sandpaper.  After I was done sanding I wiped all the dust off. Then I brushed primer on the whole thing.  Lastly, I sprayed the piece with Blossom White spray paint from Rustoleum.

7.  After it was dry I set the shelf on top of the playroom cubbies.  I love projects that create more storage in my house.  IMG_0756 IMG_0757 The total cost was $3.50 for a can of spray paint.

  2. That is a great idea!! I could use something to keep the books separate from the rest of the toys.

  6. Very clever! I like how the scallops were already part of the bench and you were able to use them in your bookshelf.
